Hey neighbor,

Here's this week's West of Houston — what's happening out west.

The week that was

A hard one to write, and our hearts are broken writing it.

A 15-year-old from Katy lost his life Saturday night in an e-bike crash near Brookshire — the second child in just over a month here in Fort Bend County. Please join us in praying for that family tonight, for comfort only God can give.

If your kid rides an e-bike or scooter, tonight's a good night to hold them close and have the talk: helmet on, slow down, full stop before crossing roads, no phones or headphones. Sheriff Fagan is asking every parent to have that conversation.

"He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds." — Psalm 147:3

Soluna Coffee opened its doors in Elyson this week. Another new hangout on the west side, and an easy excuse for a coffee run this weekend.

Katy's own No Label Brewing Co. brought home silver at the 2026 Great American Beer Festival for its Perpetual Peace brew. That's back-to-back national awards for a hometown favorite.

And Fulshear appointed veteran officer David Gott as interim police chief this week, steadying the department while the city plans its next steps.

This weekend

Monica Marie Boutique celebrates its grand opening today at 10 a.m. at The Gathering Grounds in Katy (1512 Avenue C, Bldg C). The first 20 shoppers who spend $125 get swag bags, with T-shirt giveaways through the day.

Katy Mills is hosting a fall job fair today with local employers on site. Free to attend if you're exploring what's next.

Pumpkin patch season is in full swing. First Christian Church Katy's patch on Morton Ranch Rd runs through Nov 7, or make a day of it at Dewberry Farm or Oil Ranch.

A Fulshear neighbor is giving away free basil and aloe vera starters for fall gardens ahead of kids' gardening workshops. Check the Cross Creek Ranch group post to grab some.

Looking ahead to next week: Katy ISD's board takes up proposed attendance boundary changes at its Oct 19 work study meeting. Worth watching if you've got kids in the district.

One more thing: the City of Fulshear is holding a one-day entrepreneurial workshop tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Irene Stern Community Center — startup strategy, pricing, customer development, pitching. The practical stuff. It caught our eye — we're thinking hard about how to grow this thing. Details at fulsheartexas.gov.

See you out there,

P.S. If this was useful, forward it to a neighbor. That's how West of Houston grows.
